Topic > A Criminal Justice Case: The Trayvon Martin Case

The case I decided to do my criminal justice research paper on is the Trayvon Martin case. The Trayvon Martin case is a fairly recent case that occurred in Sanford, a city in central Florida with approximately 53,000 inhabitants. This case involves Trayvon Benjamin Martin, a seventeen-year-old African-American boy born on February 5, 1995. He lived in Miami Gardens, Florida with his mother Sybrina Fulton and attended Dr. Michael M. Krop High School (CNN). Trayvon went to visit his father Tracey Martin who lived in Sanford, Florida in February of 2012. The reason this boy was sent to stay with his father is because he received a ten day suspension from school. Trayvon was suspended from school for ten days because the school found drug residue in his book bag (CNN). Trayvon's parents decided to send him to visit his father during his suspension because they didn't want him to enjoy his hometown things like family, friends and football (CNN). Additionally, this case involves twenty-eight year old George Zimmerman who was the neighborhood watch captain for the community retreat in Twin Lakes. Zimmerman was also a part-time student at Seminole State College. He is married to Shellie Zimmerman and the father of two children, Robert and Glayds Zimmerman. Young Trayvon went to the Seven Elven store with his dark colored sweatshirt and hood over his head and got a bag of skittles and some Arizona tea. he approached the clerk and paid for his items. All this was caught on camera at the Seven Eleven store. That video was the last thing Trayvon's loved ones needed to remind him of. He was returning to his father's boyfriend's house from the store around 7pm on February 26, 2012 when he was murdered (CNN). Geo...... half of the document ...... discussion and deep consideration for the problems facing the city of Sanford, I have determined that the police chief must have the trust and respect of elected officials and the confidence of the entire community,” Bonaparte said in the statement. “We must move forward with a police chief that all citizens of Sanford can support.” (Miami Herald News). The shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin that sparked national outrage and also painted Sanford in an unfavorable light across the country (Miami Herald News). It was sad to see that Trayvon's parents could not receive justice for their son's death. Everyone around the world has been following this case and it was very disturbing and shocking to find out that the jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of killing an innocent seventeen year old boy who was walking home from the store..
