Savagery is when people return to their lost human instincts and is often found in situations where people find themselves in extreme circumstances. Savagery can be found in literature especially in the novels Chronicles of a Death Foretold and Candide. However, both authors come from different times and cultures, both use the concept of savagery in both of their novels, to present problems in their specific societies. The novel Chronicles of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Márquez tells the story of the murder of Santiago Nasar by twin brothers in a small Colombian town. The Colombian author wrote the story based on true events that happened in his hometown in the 1950s. The novel Candide is a French satire written in 1759 by Voltaire, the novel is the intelligent story of a naive young man whose misadventures lead him from a dull life of study to one of adventure, misery and temporary fortune ("Voltaire"). In Chronicles of a Death Foretold and Candide both authors use descriptive imagery to contribute the tone of ferocity to criticize the social norms and culture of prospective societies. In both novels, descriptive images contribute to the tone of ferocity to evaluate social norms and cultures. of societies in terms of massacre of the dead. In Candide, the female protagonist Cunegonde sees her family devastated by the Bulgarians, just as she saw the Bulgarian army “slaughter” (31) her father and brother, and tear her mother to pieces (31). The intention of the descriptive images of the death of Cunegonde's family is to show that the behavior that Bulgarians consider normal as wild. Cunegonde did not know that everything that happened in her father's castle, that is, the murders and rapes, was "completely usual" (31). The saying…… at the center of the card……t that the essential good of human life. In Candide, the protagonist is thrown into the world of the Avars and the Bulgarians, where he witnesses the most inhuman behavior of both. Voltaire then criticizes that savagely killing everyone was useless and senseless since the Bulgarians and Avars used meaningless reasoning to kill thus exposing stupidity in all parts of society. Both authors ultimately used descriptive imagery to contribute the tone of ferocity to critique the social norms and cultures of their societies in perspective. Works Cited García, Márquez Gabriel.
