One of the major issues facing students today is being assigned gender roles and experiencing gender bias. To explain further, “society treats boys and girls differently and expects them to develop different gender identities” (87). Throughout the gender section of the book, several examples are given of how boys and girls are divided and assigned specific gender roles. For example, girls are told that “women are not good at math” and boys are told that “men are not good nurses” (87). These stereotypes influence students' thinking and subsequently become obstacles when deciding on a career. One way I would promote gender equality as a teacher is to completely eliminate the use of stereotypes in my classroom. This change will be achieved by carrying out group activities and class assignments that avoid gender bias. It is important that students have equal opportunities to achieve their goals and follow their dreams.
