Characters:- Hester Prynne was a beautiful young woman who lived in Amsterdam with her husband, Roger Chillingworth. He sent her America alone while she finished her business. In America she met the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale with whom she had a love affair. Pearl was their baby's name. When the townspeople discovered her sin, they punished her by making her wear a scarlet letter 'A', meaning adultery, on her chest. Dimmesdale was a young reverend in the community. People loved him, for his emotional way of speaking. He was Hester's secret lover. He could not live without being punished for his sins. Finally, he confessed it publicly, as soon as he did so he died.- Chillingworth was Hester's husband. While traveling to America to join his wife he was captured by Indians. It finally reached America 2 years later. When he got there, Hester was already on the gallows. He was seeking revenge on Dimmesdale, so he pretended to be his good friend trying to think of ways to torture him. - Pearl was the daughter of Hester and Dimmesdale. She was given her name because she was precious and valuable. She was very intelligent, imaginative and naughty. Pearl was a very significant character, because she reminded Hester of her sins and her love story.- Governor Bellingham was like the political authority of Boston.- Mrs. Hibbins was Governor Bellingham's sister. She was known as a wicked witch. He had a short temper, because he worshiped the devil. Summary: "The Scarlet Letter" begins in seventeenth century Boston. Boston was a Puritan settlement then. Hester Prynne is escorted out of the city jail with her daughter Pearl. Hester had a scarlet letter "A" on her chest. Someone in the crowd was telling someone else that she had been punished for adultery. Hester's husband sent her to America, while he took care of some business in Amsterdam. While Hester waits for him, she obviously had an affair and a child with her lover. She won't tell anyone who her lover is. And his punishment is to wear the scarlet letter along with public humiliation for his sin and his secret. Later, she is taken to the city gallows and reprimanded by the city fathers. He still refuses to say who Pearl's father is. Hester's missing husband, now known as Roger Chillingworth, now lives in Boston as a doctor to take revenge on Hester's secret lover..
