Leadership and its study have roots in the beginning of civilization, Egyptian rulers, Greek heroes and biblical patriarchs all have one thing in common: leadership (FOCUS HISTORY OF LEADERSHIP ,2005). There are numerous definitions and theories of leadership, however there are enough similarities in the definitions to conclude that leadership is the effort to influence and the power to induce compliance (Wren, 1995). Organizational leader focus evolved in this same period, as early organizations with authoritarian leaders who believed employees were inherently lazy moved to make work environments more conducive to increasing productivity rates (THE HISTORY OF LEADERSHIP FOCUS, 2005). The Industrial Revolution shifted the American economy from an agricultural to an industrial base and, in doing so, ushered in a change in how leaders would treat their followers. The Industrial Revolution created a paradigm shift to a new theory of leadership in which “ordinary” people gained power by virtue of their abilities (Clawson, 1999). Today, organizations are transforming into places where people are empowered, encouraged and supported in their personal lives. and professional growth throughout their careers and new technology, however, has been accompanied and reinforced by the mechanization of human thought and action, thus creating hierarchical bureaucracies (Morgan, 1997). DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIPLeadership is the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of subordinates and persuade them to follow a particular course of action (Barnard, 1938). Define success by making it clear to your employees what constitutes success and that they should measure their results, 5. You must love people and be good at communicating, 6. Develop your employees to do their jobs better than you, 7. Build morale, 8. Tackle projects alone, 9. Don't make the same decision twice, 10. Let people know who to please.
