Topic > Interpreting the 'Song of the Servant' of Isaiah 52:13-53:12

Introduction: In this essay we will undertake the title of the above assignment in the following way. First; we will briefly examine some exegetical issues, which can influence the actual translation of the text. Secondly we will seek to examine the different interpretive opinions regarding the passage and the identity of the servant in particular, interacting and comparing both the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the future perspectives. Thirdly; a brief conclusion will be given. In this essay the topics regarding the dating and authorship of Isaiah will not be addressed, as the topic is vast and the title above does not expressly require it. Exegetical issues: the purpose of this section will be to delve deeper into some exegetical issues that could influence one's interpretation of the fourth canto of the servant. The first real problem in exegesis is found in 52:15 in the phrase “so he will sprinkle many nations” (NIV italics mine) or alternatively “so he will scare many nations.” (JPS TNK italics mine). The word in question is hZnāzâ which means to splatter or (Hiphil) sprinkling of blood, oil or water either with the finger (Lev 4:6) or with a “sprinkler” (Lev 14:7).
