Topic > America's most important product: a college degree

Education is one of the most important factors in any person's success in life, but is it really worth it? The answer can be found in the article "America's Most Overrated Product: The College Degree." Written by Marty Nemko who was most likely inspired to write it due to his experience as a career counselor. In this article Nemko reaches out to parents of prospective college students to inform them of the truth that college is a money-hungry business. He brings the fourth multiple example of why bachelor's degrees are overrated and how colleges are not held to a high enough standard. Furthermore, he argues that going to college isn't even necessary to be successful, and that many of the skills needed to be successful in the workplace are already present in successful students and not just taught in some college. The text as a whole reveals the ugly truth that colleges are more focused on making money than actually helping their students succeed and for this reason parents should take action to protect their students from harm in the process. To be able to make such bold allegations as Nemko does, requires a strong claim along with good evidence and strong warrants. Although Nemko has a claim in this article, it is not explicitly written down in words. Saying that even though college can be helpful, that doesn't mean going to college is necessary for everyone. Which makes this thesis a recommendation for a course of action. Furthermore, in his article he expresses several times the need for action. While Nemko boldly asks parents to reconsider sending their children to college, he doesn't do so without providing concrete evidence, mostly presented in the form of facts or statistics. ...... middle of paper ...... college. Because of Nemko's argument I am able to agree with what he says as I too personally understand that college is not the end all be all as I have seen others close to succeed in life without it. In addition to connecting to me, this text connects to my class work and English 1302. As it teaches me that I should pay close attention to my critical reading skills as it is a dying quality in graduates. Furthermore, this text makes me wonder about the future of colleges in America and whether or not the necessary change will come or whether it will only be up to parents and students to make the best choice. Finally, the message contained in the text adequately fits modern times and circumstances as college and university education have been a hot topic in recent years, which has caused great concern to the audience of its text, parents and students..
