In the story of Ernest Hemingway, The Brief Happy Life of Francis Macomber, Francis Macomber, due to his cowardly performance, was an unhappy man according to Hemingway. During a safari trip in Africa, Macomber was on a quest to regain his happiness while hunting; however, he was humiliated after running away from a wounded lion. Embarrassed by her husband, Mrs. Macomber begins sleeping with the safari guide, Mr. Wilson. Francis' last attempt to prove himself, Macomber shoots the buffalo; unfortunately the buffalo was not dead. At the end of the story, Margot Macomber kills her husband trying to save him from getting hurt by the buffalo, but some may wonder whether this is accidental or intentional. Mrs. Macomber intentionally killed her husband due to generally cowardly behavior which led to them having other marriage problems. “Macomber was very rich” (p.13), so he knew that Mrs. Macomber would stay with him. Some women are attracted to very wealthy men, and we see this in Mrs. Macomber's case. Needless to say, Mrs. Macomber, just as the critics have said, “finds Francis attractive because of his wealth” (Sugiyama). Therefore, Mrs. Macomber could have killed her husband in hopes of becoming a widow and pursuing her hard-earned money. Although they had their problems, it was evident that Margot was not willing to divorce Francis under any circumstances because of his wealth. Readers might say that Mrs. Macomber never loved her husband; she was in love with her money. For this reason Mrs. Macomber could have killed her husband to obtain his benefits. Francis Macomber was never a man of confidence; so his performance levels were cowardly. During his first journey Macomber went on a hunt to find his inner... middle of the paper... one might conclude that Francis' death is uncertain, but the information gathered may change the reader's opinion on whether the his death was intentional. or just a simple accident. In closing, Mrs. Macomber intentionally killed her husband, which means she is guilty of killing her husband. Margot, in the near future, was very devastated that her husband had died, but now she could acquire his remains. Wilson still remains a tour guide and likely did everything in his power to cover up what is now being called a murder. It's a real shame that Francesco, after regaining his confidence, wasn't able to celebrate with his wife. All Francis had was hope; I hope one day someone will appreciate him, I hope one day he will gain his trust and I hope his wife changes her opinion of him and sees that he is a brave man, but as we know his short happy life was taken away.
