I considered idealistically what I could do to have the greatest impact on medicine. I decided that earning a doctorate in microbiology and developing treatments and medicines seemed like the best option to achieve this goal. I started doing microbiological research and realized it would be a frustrating, but also revealing and valuable experience in my life. I was frustrated because I had spent a lot of time on a project, but when the dust settled I was left with more questions than answers. I was discouraged, and while I realized that research is important to the medical community, I felt that I needed a more human aspect to the work I was doing. I decided to create a job in the shadow of a hometown DO, Dr. Wilson. He treated his patients like human beings rather than cases and did what he could to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
