Educational Reform The problems plaguing the modern education system generate enormous discussion in this country, as do the possibilities for making reforms to that ailing system. Indeed, it is precisely this aspect of education that today causes considerable debate in social and political circles. Jon Spayde, Mike Rose, bell hooks, and Jeffrey Hart all expressed adamant opinions about education, appropriate areas of emphasis, and also the role society plays. It remains interesting to note that, among countless vocalizations and opinions, very little can be agreed upon on this complex topic. However, it is not often discussed that society actually has a profound effect on education. Given that this aura of influence shows no signs of fading, the topic in question is vital to the growth and development of a new generation of students. By comparing and contrasting the most compelling opinions and observations, I hope to find a complete picture of this contemporary conundrum. Jon Spayde's "Learning in the Key of Life" contemplates in depth the realities facing the education of schoolchildren. Spayde has the valuable insight that children are not simply educated with what they learn in school. Rather, every moment involves some kind of learning; Spayde is actually calling for society to recognize the importance of daily learning in this equation. Indeed, he believes that, in a clustered and complex society, it is no wonder that a certain degree of confusion and intellectual chaos ensues (60). Schools seem to push students rapidly into education, force-feeding them concepts of “technology” that will presumably be essential to their survival. This technology is continuous and consistent... middle of paper... a hopeful encouragement. In the end, no single path to reform is likely; rather, a combination of efforts between school policy and societal concern will reap the most desirable outcome.
