The SpartansThe "Spartans", who they were, where they came from and what they accomplished for Greece and, over time, for modern society. I hope to answer all these questions in my investigation. I found the Spartans very interesting when I first encountered them in Homer's "Odyssey", where we hear about "Helen of Sparta", the companion of both "Paris of Troy" and his enemy and enemy of his city "Menelaus of Sparta". In fact, the whole war broke out because Helen ran away with Paris and all of Greece was dragged into what was initially a personal feud. If this had not happened, the Odyssey would not have taken place and the ancient, fable-like story, as it seems to have developed, of the giant wooden horse outside the city walls of Troy at the end of the Trojan War. Therefore, by looking at just one person in Spartan history we can see how much the city influenced our modern society. Although Athens is one of the most interesting and exciting ancient cities according to some modern scholars, interest in Sparta is becoming ever greater and this is clear from watching recent TV series such as Channel Four's 'Sparta', researched and presented by Bethany Hughes. Furthermore, I must add that this interest did not arise suddenly, but has gradually grown and more and more books discussing the Sparta lifestyle are published. Where is Sparta?====== ==========Sparta is located in the southern mountainous regions of Greece. Also, as you can see from the diagram, it was, and still is, quite close to nearby cities, especially Mystras. [IMAGE]In fact the word "Sparta" in...... middle of the card ......was very different and they were not always so similar to the Athenians, who are the most famous of the Greek civilizations. The only thing that seems to have been the same throughout Greece was the fact that everyone worshiped the same gods. These Gods who are still quite famous and interesting to the modern world. And not only these, but in many things the Greeks influenced us very much and the Spartans influenced these Greeks very much, although not always directly they influenced us very much and in some of their ways of life they have become part of modern life nowadays. 'Today. I feel that by knowing a lot more about this topic I have not only increased my general knowledge, but increased my interest in the ancient Greeks. I also think that the way I view people and civilizations in general will be in a different light.
