Topic > Nursing: Making a Career in Nursing - 706

Every child is asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and I was no exception. I always knew I had a passion for helping people and I remember role-playing with my brothers where I was their nurse who cured them of an illness or pain. As a child, I could imagine myself wearing a lab coat and with a stethoscope around my neck. The healthcare profession has always fascinated me. I chose a career in nursing for many reasons, including: the personal joy I find in helping others, in making a difference in the lives of my patients, and the experience and knowledge I would gain on a daily basis. When someone is in need, I can honestly say that I am the go-to person. For someone to come to you, you want to make sure that both scenarios can make a difference for the better in someone's life. As nurses you are able to build a connection with your patients, as you are always checking on them. I have built so many bonds with my patients as a CNA and want to continue to do the same as a nurse. My nursing career will allow me to help people in many different ways. I had a patient who was paralyzed from the waist down, and although he couldn't speak due to brain damage, I knew my presence was making a difference. While I was with him, I read him the Bible or played music for him. These two activities seemed to calm him and help him fall asleep. I want to continue making a difference in people's lives, even when it's something as simple as reading a book or listening to music. Everything matters, no matter how small the contribution Medicine evolves every day, and as a lifelong learner, I am excited to always evolve and change the way I approach patient care. During my last semester of my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to attend Kansas City Kansas Community College Technical School in the morning to receive my Certified Nursing Assistant license. Now that I have my CNA, I intend to advance to my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Becoming a nurse will expose me to a huge amount of new knowledge in the field, which makes me truly special
