English grammar and language are taught in schools throughout the United States. There are many different students in each classroom and as teachers we need to differentiate our instruction. English language learners; also known as ELL; students tend to struggle with grammar, but we help them learn it by implementing some techniques. There are two types of ELL students; they are students who are not native to where they live and bilingual students. Bilingual students can range from being fluent to the process of learning another language. These students are learning/know the English language but have difficulty making frequent mechanical errors with grammar and syntax. The focus of the ELL program is a high-intensity language program designed to help students improve their English proficiency. The English language is complex and learning it is a long process. ELL students should be taught strategies such as learning through speaking and listening. ELL teachers work with native English speakers to help them develop language skills and social skills. The programs they are following cover conversational English grammar, reading, listening comprehension, writing and vocabulary. Researchers have found that ELL students learn best about relational topics in which they are interested. They can be taught through strategies such as the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP). Statistics from the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education, state that “The percentage of public school students in the United States who were English language learners (ELLs) was highest in 2010-11 (10%) compared to 2002-03 (9 percent).” (2013). The first... center of the card... five beautiful wings and a long body. Read it to class, then the class will repeat the sentence a few times. Then discuss what they learned about butterflies. Conclusion It is important to know effective strategies for teaching grammar to ELL students. Research shows that instructional strategies for ELL students consist of SIOP, learning through listening, and learning through speaking. There are many students in ELL classes, and that number will likely continue to grow. These effective teaching techniques will improve grammar learning for ELL students. It is important to reach every single student in our classroom, so being aware of students' needs and how to help them develop in the future is crucial. These strategies are not only beneficial for English language learners, but they are also helpful for regular students in the classroom.
