Mrs. Mallard reveals that she loves her husband, but the independence she is about to gain is what is leading to a sudden surge of happiness and motivation. Ironically, Mrs. Mallard was ultimately not allowed to enjoy her newfound independence. In the story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, Mrs. Mallard learns of her husband's death from her sister Josephine. Mrs. Mallard cries in her sister's arms from the sudden shock and fear of being alone. After Mrs. Mallard goes to a room to be alone, she begins to realize that, due to her husband's death, she is now independent. She starts revealing her inner thoughts and started seeing through the bitter procession of years that she will be alone and started embracing them.
