Deviance in SportsThis course was a very interesting experience for me. The course and presentation allowed me to see the world of sport from a different perspective. When I was researching the topic of race in sports, I was surprised by the amount of articles, books, and newspaper articles describing how racial identification has been used against many players, athletes, and fans. As the class began to present their topics, I was amazed by the different topics such as gender identity, racial identity, social class, and finances that still face different challenges in the world of sports. I believe that the dominant ideologies in sport need to be changed. By changing these ideas there may be a way to make sports a more fun and safe area for many people. Throughout history, sports have played an important role in many cultures and civilizations. Historically, sports were used during the Industrial Revolution to make workers feel that everyday activities were normal. Sports gave workers a sense of stability and structure that these prominent ideologies had the ability to place people who had different points of view into categories. A very interesting aspect that was presented to me was deviance in sport. Deviance can be used in various situations. Deviance in society is seen as a violation of “norms”. An example of deviance in sport would be a runner who decides to give up mid-race. Many people in the sports society would see him as a failed athlete. Even though that same athlete could have avoided a serious injury. By not finishing the race the runner did not respect what everyone around him expected him to do. As an athlete, it may become difficult to ignore expectations. Once an athlete starts something, they are expected to complete it even though they might be
