Topic > Comparing Temptation in Macbeth and A Simple Plan

William Shakespeare once stated, “Temptation is the fire that brings out the dregs of the heart.” (William Shakespeare) Although a little dark, many works of art have this similar idea. In this way similarities are found regarding aspects of each work. The differences occur in the protagonist's personal journey on the path of temptation. Undeniably, this parallel is found in William Shakespeare's infamous play, Macbeth, and the two-time Oscar-winning film, A Simple Plan. Macbeth is fighting for the honor of the kingdom even though he is not likely to inherit the crown and only learns about the idea through a prophecy of three witches. Hank Mitchell, the film's protagonist, receives $4.4 million in an abandoned plane that he and his friends are the first to find. Hank and Macbeth's journeys follow a similar plot dealing with character changes, conflicts faced, and a tragic outcome that seems to result from the force of temptation. Hank and Macbeth's personality changes appear to be largely similar and follow a certain course. from start to finish. On the surface, Hank and Macbeth appear to be noble and respected within their community. Macbeth is even titled as a nobleman who fights in war for his king, Duncan. He fights alongside his partner Banquo and together they manage to defeat their allies and earn a lot of respect from the other citizens. Hank begins as he approaches fatherhood and works for an insurance company. Many people within his community know him, such as the local sheriff Carl, for taking care of his younger and less successful brother, Jacob. Mainly, Hank and Macbeth have strong values that push them to do the right thing despite being an average man. Towards the unraveling of... middle of the paper... cbeth comes up with his simplistic plan to become king, while Hank comes up with a strategy to keep the money a secret. Highly motivated and forgiving for several reasons, Hank and Macbeth find themselves on killing sprees and eventually reach their goal only to have it easily taken away from them, mostly due to ignorance. It is quite sad to wonder if all human beings were presented with a temptation as attractive as power or money, how much it could turn the noblest of human beings evil and greedy, as seen in the tragedies of Hank Mitchell and Macbeth.
