Pornography, being a multi-billion dollar industry, is a topic that people tend to shy away from when confronted with the conversation about it. However, it is clear that people of both genders will find ways to pursue this field. If this were not the case, the industry would not be amassing the billions of dollars it currently is. What few people understand or take the time to explore is what pornography is truly defined as. Pornography has been around for centuries and has affected countless people since then. Pornography is defined as “printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activities, intended to stimulate sexual arousal” (Lubben). The word pornography comes from the Greek words por'ne (“prostitute”) and graphein (“to write”). In essence, when you watch pornography, you see prostitution taking place (Lubben). Buying, viewing or selling pornography is participation in the prostitution industry. On another note, sex workers also face many challenges within the industry. The president of the Pink Cross Foundation and former porn star is part of this non-profit organization that saves women from the porn industry, fights pornography in the legal system, seeks health safety, tries to stop sex trafficking and to enforce labor laws. While some women in the industry find nothing wrong or immoral in their work, others say they want a way out but don't know a safe way out. This woman, Shelley Lubben, was a porn star for eight years and after leaving the industry she was in recovery for another eight years. She said she "took on their garbage," meaning the garbage of those in the industry. She found that women in the industry become depressed, feel isolated... in the middle of the paper... or of it. This addiction is also compared to that of drugs because people cling to it and continually try to reach new heights. To begin with, people repeatedly return to the material for sexual arousal and arousal. Second, people feel and increase the need for more explicit, deviant, and sexually shocking material to achieve the same level of sexual stimulation. Third, people become desensitized to what they initially saw as gross and shocking material and over time the material becomes acceptable and desirable to the viewer. Finally, pornography addicts have an increasing tendency to begin “acting out” the sexual activities they have seen (Lubben). It goes without saying that watching pornography is not something that is easy to put aside once those images have been placed in one's head.
