Some psychoanalysts still agree that directing the child in the direction of gender norms given by society is the best treatment; however, new studies provide harsh assessments of how noncompliant children are treated and diagnosed. Many of the studies on gender individualism focus on children who show transgender, lesbian, and gay preferences. It is said that treating children who do not conform to social gender norms the way they have been treated in the past is now considered unethical. Feminists in the 1960s and 1970s, along with researchers and psychoanalysts, began to expose society's prejudices regarding gender. Feminists laid the foundation for the theory of the social construction of gender. I found a quote in this article very true and enlightening "You are not born a woman, but you become one".
