An interesting example of good corrupted by Evil is the character Smeagol, commonly known by his alter ego Gollum. Gollum is perhaps the most complex character in The Lord of the Rings, representing greed and ambition but also showing his internal battles with himself, thus proving that he is neither purely evil nor has he become purely evil. Gollum is a unique character who displays complexity beyond what appears on the surface. Gollum began as a Stoor Hobbit and once cheerful member of the River People called Smeagol, who became the elongated and disfigured being once his greed for the Ring took over. His greed for the Ring was so great that he even killed his cousin Deagol for it. This is a greater representation of ambition and greed because Smeagol wanted the Ring so badly that he would kill to have it, despite his justifications that it was supposed to be his birthday present.
