The beginning of American modern dance began in the 20th century when dancers began to move away from traditional forms of choreographic dance such as ballet. One of the founders of this rapidly modernizing dance movement was Isadora Duncan. Isadora Duncan sought to create free dances without the strict or limited movements of ballet. As a result Isadora Duncan formed a dance style that reflected her free spirit. He looked to classical Greek arts, social dances, and nature for inspiration. In a speech entitled The Dance of the Future he stated that the future of dance will be similar to the dance of the ancient Greeks, natural and free. As a result he developed a dance style based on improvisation and interpretation. His dance moves consisted of running, standing, falling and jumping all movements which became the foundation of his dance style. Isadora Duncan was born in San Francisco, California, in 1877.
