In The Houses of History, selected and introduced by Anna Green and Kathleen Troup, the different theories of the twentieth century are broken down and specifics about each theory are introduced. Historians use these theories to study certain aspects of history and to be able to compare two theories with each other and identify the problems faced by each theory. Since all aspects of history have some sort of connection, it would be best to take a holistic approach to the history of different eras. As we first read in Arnold at the beginning of the semester, “History is above all an argument (Arnold 13).” Therefore, to compare two theories of history, the argument must begin with the facts of the theory and what it is used for, and then discuss where it might have flaws or not tie the story together. Starting from ethnohistory, which includes anthropology, the beginnings of different studies on humanity are introduced, when the book then shifts to a postcolonial perspective, visions of the future are focused on the mistakes of the past. Each theory is intended to explain the opinions and studies of different historians around the world. This essay will compare my views on ethnohistory combined with anthropology with views of postcolonial history. To get started with anthropology and outline the timelines of humanity, one can begin to accumulate facts about how humans have evolved over hundreds and thousands of years. Using anthropology as a theory of history is the ability to understand social and cultural behaviors that connect the concept of human culture. As historians there are many advantages to using anthropology, studying the behaviors of humankind and all its variations is a real... middle of paper ......d the study of linguistics has allowed postcolonial historians to gain perspective from these indigenous cultures on the European influences they encountered. Both of these theories benefit from each other and are able to help historians process the research of facts and present them as a primary source. To consider these theories not as major factors for historians would be a false statement, as twenty-first century historians we must allow ourselves to use such theories because there are always issues to discuss and drawing on the past and engaging in can complement our topic.
