At the end of the 20th century many problems began to arise in America. Just to list a few, the war in Vietnam is raging, the hippie peace and love movement, and a huge amount of civil rights activist groups are going full blast. In this particular moment, however, the problem has put all American citizens to the test. Everyone's starting to question its purpose, the hippies have substantially dwindled due to who knows how many STDs and free concerts gone wrong, but the one question that's still on almost everyone's mind is when it will be given to everyone the same rights? When will segregation and discrimination end? Civil rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr. and other nonviolent civil rights groups had some success, but the changes they made were slow and infrequent. Such groups, for example the Black Panthers, did not believe in this non-violent approach and thought that they would get their rights the way they wanted by expressing "Black Power" as they called it. In the whole scheme of things, Black Power and the largely black radical movement have had their ups and downs, their rights and their wrongs, their successes and their failures. During the late 1960s, civil rights are becoming an urgent issue across America. Many American citizens have been told at this point that equal rights are coming and that there will be big changes coming to the country. Tyson even states, “We are slaves on the run from our past, and only by turning to face the hounds can we find our freedom beyond them.” (Tysson). He is saying that something must be done to have this freedom. The black community must stand up and face the challenges placed upon it. The push for these… middle of paper… many obstacles for the average citizen to overcome, but hopes were still high. This great hope and idea that the American land of the free was indeed truly free was what kept black radicals and even white supporters of the nation's civil rights and desegregation movement going. The successes in providing greater trust and security to black citizens gave the nation a good look and also what everyone was looking forward to, but dealing with the failures of some members of the Black Power movement was devastating. Bearing in mind the successes and failures of Black Power, questions arise. Questions like what would have happened if Malcom America, the land of the free, would be what it is today??
