Misconceptions? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be monitored or perhaps always watched? In George Orwell's novel 1984, Oceania is a society with a totalitarian government that controls all members of society in every way. They even monitor and control thoughts. The government is very determined on its path. People have to be controlled, there's really no other way, unless you want to disappear. Throughout the novel Orwell glosses over many social issues. Oceania is full of them. Orwell targets psychological manipulation quite often. Oceania does not want its people to think independently. They have junior spies (who are neighborhood children), telescreens to observe mainly external party members. To scare their society they invented this image of “Big Brother”. Also, the phrase “Big Brother is watching you”. Worse, to make sure your thoughts are pure they have the thought police. Winston Smith, however, believes there is something more to Big Brother.
