Universities are becoming extremely active in encouraging community in their universities and persuading students to become part of the whole to get the most out of their university experience. This is demonstrated by the encouragement to get involved in numerous groups, dorm activities, Greek life, and numerous other organizations offered throughout the universities. Building community during the first year of college is considered essential for both students and the university according to Katherine J. Nevins, Ph.D. “Belonging means both being part of the whole and having shared ownership of that whole” ( Nevins). He is explaining that once students develop a sense of belonging to a university or even just an organization, they feel ownership of their new identity and friendships that make the community as a whole stronger with each new student. “Community building owes allegiance to well-researched pedagogical approaches such as collaborative learning, cooperative learning, and structured learning communities” (Nevins). Through this he explains that community is as much an activity as it is a science. Extensive research developed the system we now predominantly know as common community-building strategies prevalent in universities around the world. One of the popular community goals in college is joining fraternities and sororities or more known as Greek life. “I think it builds friendships and bonds that can go beyond university life” (Estrella). The sense of bonding and community in these groups goes beyond just superficial bonds or weekend hangouts, they are like family to each other creating one of the strongest senses of community on campus. “It can be strength for someone who doesn't know how to get involved...... middle of paper ......l.edu/media/university/faculty/engaged-Teaching/media/BuildingCommunity-knevins. pdf>."Research on Greek Life."
