In society, people are wrongly judged based on false impressions, social status, and race, as well as other factors that influence an individual's self-image. This is very significant in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird through the characters of Arthur Radley and Tom Robinson who are innocent victims of the prejudice of the people of Maycomb. The first character who represents the concept of error of judgment is Arthur Radley, who is misunderstood by others and nicknamed an intimidating person. From the rumors circulating about him, it appears that he is an innocent victim because he simply chooses not to associate with society and people do not respect his way of life because it is different from theirs. The other character who represents this conception of error of judgment is Tom Robinson, regarded with hatred by most of the people of Maycomb. Through the events of his condemnation by the white community, this shows that Tom is an innocent victim; the color of his skin defines his fate in court. But truly, these innocent victims are kind people. The people of Maycomb are too critical and don't understand that Arthur Radley and Tom Robinson are truly good people; completely ignoring their true personality. Both Arthur Radley and Tom Robinson are innocent victims of the judgment of others in Maycomb. Superstitious attributes follow Arthur, while Tom is affected by racism and prejudice. Arthur Radley is considered an intimidating, ghost-like person. As Jem describes Arthur to Dill, he tells him that “inside the house lived a malevolent ghost” (Lee 8). Jem's behavior represents the community's perception of Arthur. Another way Arthur is misjudged is by the nickname he was given; “Boo.” This nickname was invented by the pe...... middle of paper......, Jem's pants got caught on the way out and stayed there. But Arthur fixes his torn pants to eliminate any evidence that it was Jem, because he knew it was him. These are all good deeds done by Arthur that really show that he is a good person and that there is no reason for anyone to think badly of him. So, the people of Maycomb are prejudiced and should really look deeper into someone and understand better before making assumptions. Both Arthur Radley and Tom Robinson are innocent victims of prejudice and misjudgment. Arthur is truly a good and caring person who would fight for justice. And Tom Robinson is not a criminal and is truly a kind and pure-hearted person. Having prejudices towards others is rude and misleading. We must learn to look deeply into the heart of the other, to understand him completely.
