He is not brave, selfless, chivalrous, or noble; with an immoral thought he only performs great deeds in front of an audience. Knights are supposed to be fearless warriors, Gawain contradicts this stereotype. Once Gawain ventures towards the green chapel, he is overcome by fear. However, the fear of death is not fundamental. When his escort offers to help him avoid the clash, Gawain had already obtained the green band; he fights knowing he won't die. Gawain fears that his kingdom will recognize his lack of pure motivation and moral courage if he abandons the game, worried that if he "forsake this place in fear and flee", Camelot would discover that he was "a vile coward" who "could not be excused" for his lack of internal chivalry (2130-2131). He does not go to fight to demonstrate that he is chivalrous;
