Where Men Win Glory is an ironic euphemism for war. The title is ironic because there is nothing glorious about the war or how it ended Pat Tillman's beautiful life. Jon Krakauer orchestrates this masterpiece with his diligent, articulate descriptions and a timeline stitched together from the threads of two worlds. The author's style can best be characterized by his challenging, precise diction and his ability to interject fluently with pertinent quotes and facts that further convince the reader to his cause. Throughout the book, the author's tone exploits resentment towards the militant hierarchy; as through their naivety, deception, and manipulation, the military uses Pat's death as propaganda to bolster support for the war. Furthermore, the Army conceals the fact that Tillman was the victim of fratricide and deceives the nation into believing that Tillman's end was a valiant fight against the insurgents. When the truth is exposed and prosecuted by Dannie, Pat's mother, the Army destroys the evidence and pleads guilty to ignorance as a rebuttal. This book is shaped by three prodigious aspects that help illustrate Pat's life story. The neglect of war, the importance of family, and improvement through change were all important ingredients that created a virtuous life. Each theme also challenges me personally to reevaluate the facts I have been fed and the reality I have been presented with. By doing so, I can gain a solid foundation of knowledge and an intellectual ability that can challenge all the facts presented. War is the means to many ends. The end of ruthless dictators, land disputes and human lives: each plays its part in the argument for war. War is controllable. It can be avoided; however, once she started, the bat… middle of the paper… unless it was a matter of national security, and she would work to improve her terrible state of self-deprecation. In the case of family, people today are further devaluing the value of such a thing. Disturbing side effects include adultery, fornication, spousal abuse, and rampant numbers of children by unmarried partners. Where Men Win Glory shows the influence of family in creating enlightened people and the positive effects it can have on others from being in a loving environment – happiness being one of them. Finally, change, as I explained above, is an amazing, life-changing feat. Imagine such a movement on a global scale. If you have not read this book carefully, you are missing out on life; read this book and interpret your own meanings. So I challenge you, as Pat would, to actively work towards bettering yourself. See what happens; you might like it.
