The population of these ground-nesting birds has declined from 16 million in 1900 to nearly 350,000 in 2010. That's a loss of nearly 98 percent of all sage grouse. In 2004, the capercaillie was refused ESA protection. However, on September 22, 2015, the sage grouse was found to warrant protection needs and placed on the federal endangered species list. Amphibians and reptiles in the southwestern United States have posed major survival problems, particularly the Arizona toad species found in Utah. These toads, as well as many other reptiles and amphibians, are experiencing excessive habitat loss along with other threats to their survival. The Arizona toad is currently under review to determine the severity of its threatened status and whether it should be protected by legislation
