According to Britannica (2014) the 18th century German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, stated: “Act only according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that which should become universal law." Halbert & Ingulli (2012) state: “deontological ethics is characterized by fidelity to universal principles – for example, respect for life, fairness, telling the truth, keeping promises – whatever the consequences”. With this approach, Jane should not be afraid to express her concerns regardless of the outcome, considering retaliation. On the other hand, this approach outlines the ability to keep promises. Based on the case study, it was clear that Eddie had specifically informed Jane of the need to maintain strict confidentiality regarding employee salaries and pay scales, therefore Jane, by accepting the position, would have an obligation to keep that promise to Eddie and, if not, to face the consequences. . However, this approach speaks volumes about absolute fairness and, to be honest, I would therefore advise Jane to take this approach over utilitarianism
