Nazi Germany was harsh on the country. Young people were forced to join the Reich whether they wanted to or not. Swing clubs were popular at night for many civilians. Peter Muller was a young German who was very fond of swing music, but the pressing influence and power of the Hitler Youth (HJ) regime forced him to live a life of pain after he was required to join the HJ, despite his desires and past struggles. Peter Müller enters the swing club together with his friends Thomas Berger and the crippled Arvid. Immediately Thomas lures a woman to dance with him, which causes Peter to look around the room for a dance partner, and when he sees a woman looking at him, he makes his move. After Peter returns home, his brother Willie is excited to see him and begs to take him with him next time. Peter easily ignores his brother's request. The following day Peter, Thomas and Arvid are walking down the street when Peter's brother alerts them that HJ agents are attacking a swinging boy. The group rushes to the location where Thomas attacks one of the HJs only to discover that the so-called "swing kid" was none other than a Jew. After the officers leave, Peter realizes that the Nazis are becoming more and more violent, so he gains even greater hatred towards them. Peter goes to work in a bookstore delivering books to customers; when he returns home he finds a Nazi officer in the house who hits his mother. He immediately rushes to her and attacks the officer to no avail. After the altercation occurs, a knock is heard on the door. A Gestapo officer is at the door and tells the Nazi officer to leave. Peter is not happy with the presence of the Gestapo, as kind as they may seem. The Gestapo sits at the table and asks Peter's mother some questions that s...... middle of paper...... Peter has to escape before the Nazis capture him. Thomas' plea to his friend falls on deaf ears as Peter is dragged away by Nazi officers. The Gestapo notices Peter and tells the officers to stop. He looks at Peter and says “Such a waste, so much passion, for nothing.” Peter starts singing swing music and yells "swing heil". Peter is then taken to a labor camp, his brother chases the truck repeatedly shouting "swing heil", with tears in his eyes Peter says goodbye to his brother. Peter's struggles were intense. Much hatred flowed from him as an equal amount was seen from his eyes. He started out as a swing-loving German boy and became the thing he hated most. Peter never lost his spirit. He was never brainwashed as many HJs were just like his best friend Thomas was. Peter never lost his love for swing, even in the face of death he remained faithful to his passion.
