According to Anzaldua, “Chicano Spanish is considered by purists and most Latinos to be deficient, a mutilation of Spanish” (Anzaldua 32). The conflict between Chicano Spanish and Spanish that occurs in Latino society is a great example of people considering themselves right in a situation where there is no right answer. Latino speakers of Spanish who believe it is normal are disturbed by the change in the Spanish language. They believe their opinions will be challenged, they believe they are right, and they believe anyone who challenges their opinions is inferior. People who see all other points of view are really just trying to appear more powerful. As in Tan's essay, people humiliated others to promote their own opinions, thus gaining power over others they humiliated. According to Tan, "She said they wouldn't give her any more information(...) And when the doctor finally called her daughter, I, who spoke in perfect English--that's it--we got assurances that the CT scan would be done. find” (Tan 2). Doctors treated Tan's mother differently because of her use of what they considered “crooked language,” which led to her being treated poorly. People have an image of that who consider the right English, anyone who does not speak the right English is usually considered ignorant in both Tan's and Anzaldua's essays, lack of open-mindedness is one of the reasons why people want to become more powerful than others. People fail to realize that what they believe is not always the right answer, as with stereotypes, people try to gain power over others to make themselves seem more
