Clash of the RacesAfrica has always been the center of colonization for many European countries. With its colonization came the stereotypes that Africans were inhuman, primitive and savage compared to the humanity of civilized Europeans. The traditional model simplifies stereotypes that Africans are bad and Europeans are good. Fortunately, the situation is not so clear. In Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, both the Igbo of Umuofia and the English of Europe present good and dark sides of their respective races, revealing that traditional perceptions of these races are not entirely accurate. Through their systems of government, judicial systems, and religion, both parties have positive and negative effects on each other. As the traditional model states, Europeans had a positive effect on the Africans of Umuofia. First, the British missionaries built a hospital for the people of the village. The villagers claim that “the white man's medicine was quick and worked well” (181). They shared European knowledge of medicine with the villagers and this greatly improved their overall health and well-being. Furthermore, the Europeans built a school for the people of Umuofia which led to them acquiring jobs. In particular, “It only took a few months to become a court messenger or even a court clerk (181).” The schools also taught villagers advanced, knowledge-based positions. For example, “those who stayed the longest became teachers” (181-182). This transfer of knowledge has helped African society become more educated and gain employment in the future. Contrary to the traditional model, the Africans of Umuofia village are civilized and humane. The village of Umofia has common...... middle of paper ......the way it was imposed on them was inhumane So it is clear that the Europeans also had a dark side. In summary, if there is one The obvious fact is that the issue is not as clear as the traditional model makes it seem. The inhabitants of Umuofia have a dark side, however it is evident that they also have a civilized and humane side. Likewise, Europeans in general also demonstrate both humanity and inhumanity by massacring an entire tribe and imprisoning many Africans who do not comply. They also try to enlighten Africans by providing jobs and medicine. To conclude, one cannot simply say that Europeans are superior and Africans are inferior. In today's society, many stereotyped people exist and will exist forever, but these people should not move forward or return to segregation??
