Animal extinction is a problem that is occurring all over the world. It is also something that has happened since the beginning of time. However, in the past this was a natural process that took a long time, now with human involvement the extinction of some species is accelerating. Most species become extinct due to habitat destruction, introduction of non-native organisms, and direct killing. Marine species are no exception to the acceleration of human extinction nor the general benefit they receive from it, but only those classified as more valuable than other species have a say in classifying them as endangered while the others are extinct. The extinction of marine life has gained great value for some scientists and a few people in recent years, since the world is only covered by about 75% water, all marine species are difficult to perceive. The NOAA (National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration) website states that “approximately 2,100 species of marine life” that they know of are listed as endangered. They also stated that in the last “40 years (1972) 11 species have become extinct, of which 2 were marine life specimens.” Within that time period, generations to come will never see those species. Until recently, humanity seemed to view the ocean as a source of infinite resources. Its vast size, depth and unexplored frontiers have made the ocean invulnerable to overexploitation, however in recent years much research has been conducted into the combined effects of pollution, acidification, ocean warming, overfishing and oxygen depletion levels in the 'water, and just as the world above the ocean is having big problems with similar issues, so is the underworld. As... midway through the paper... the effect of what humanity does to the ocean, the implications became much worse than anyone had individually realized. This is a very serious situation that requires unequivocal action at all levels. We are examining the consequences for humanity that will impact our lives and, even worse, our children and subsequent generations. "Endangered Species Act | Overview." Endangered species.
