The American philosopher George Santayana warned: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Whether remembering the past or learning from it, the consequences of repeating history are far greater than any other consequences. The world must be educated on the events of the past so that the future can prosper. If humanity is not taught about the atrocities of the Holocaust, those atrocities will be repeated in cities and towns around the world. Evidence of this repetition is seen in modern American ghettos and in Darfur. Evidence that history has begun to repeat itself can be seen in American cities across the country. Evidence that the Holocaust must be taught is found for the first time in America's ghettos. Like the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust, these communities are often dirty and poorly managed. The buildings are covered in rubbish and infested with insects and vermin. In his book Coming Up Black: Patterns of Ghetto Socialization, David Schulz, a well-known social researcher, reveals how the ghettos mirror the overcrowding of Warsaw because more than 10,000 people “[live] in filth” (Schulz 4). Correlations are established between the lack of adequate education and the repetition of events. For example, most adolescents do not experience stable environments that promote learning. In ghettos across the country, children “attend five or six schools before finishing elementary school” (Schulz 15). As a result, the education of today's youth is hindered. Properly educated youth is crucial to avoid repeating history. On the contrary, many argue that the Holocaust has been recognized and therefore its repetition will be avoided. The argument is that banks and governments around the world “…have recognized that… middle of paper… people during the Holocaust are mirrored in the exceptional suffering of four million individuals, and rising, during the Darfur genocide . Obviously, it is necessary to teach the world about the Holocaust so that wars like Darfur do not continue to perpetuate history throughout the world. Undoubtedly, history has been repeating itself deadly for decades, resulting in modern tragedies such as the American ghettos and Darfur, making it imperative that the Holocaust world revisit the events of the Holocaust. For the future to be promising, the world must come together to educate each other about the atrocities that marred the past. Until then, history will continue to show the same brutal events in different places. The urgency of this problem is expressed in the words of Will Durant who confesses: “The history of man unfolds in a sad circle, because he is not yet master of the earth that supports him”..”
