When I deal with African-American history the question of when we were born as a nation comes to mind. In the video documentary Hidden Colors, we see that the boogeyman is indeed the original man. Through my experience learning American and world history in middle and high school, you can see that white people, who are said to be the dominant culture, try to leave out crucial information concerning the Moors or even those blacks who taught the Europeans what they knew in terms of hygiene (bathing, raising livestock, building houses with drainage systems, etc.) and much more. On the other hand, the book Before Christopher Columbus provides information that focuses on the Africans who arrived before Christopher Columbus' voyage to the new world, what is now known as America. Throughout the documentary Hidden Colors we can see one main point that a person can grasp is the idea that black people were the first to circumnavigate (to sail completely around something) the world, traveling to America and other parts of the world, via ship . Also, the Portaguisw were aware of Africans traveling with those from the New World and the Europeans try to make it seem like they were the first to do so, but blacks or other people were already settled there. With this in mind it explains that because African Americans do not fully understand their history, many of them are told to understand it. The book Before Christopher Columbus points out that the reason we look at European history, which we shouldn't do, is because it doesn't tell the comfortable stories of African culture, as many libraries have been destroyed and burned with millions of precious pieces of information. The second important point made in Hidden Colors is the image of Africans. The in-depth story... half the paper... are not genetically sufficient. This was a component that was not mentioned in Before Christopher Columbus, however, this book does. As we begin to learn more about Africans we must be open-minded and ready to ask questions to deepen our understanding. Watching both the documentary Hidden Color and Before Columbus can help us understand that we cannot be passive and wait for America to be enlightened when it comes to understanding that black people are the master race. I see that we need to take the information we know, regardless of size, and share the truth about African American culture so that we can take back what is rightfully ours, which is our power because blacks are the majority. Africans have circumnavigated the world, built educational systems, laid the foundations of many art forms and, above all, are the inventors and innovators of the world.
