There is a popular cartoon on the Internet that shows three men standing by the fence of a baseball game, all hoping to watch the game. Each man stands on a chest of the same size, since everyone has the same resource they are actually equal, but the problem however is that only one man can watch the game. The men vary in height, one is tall, the other is of medium height and the last one is very short. Only the tall man is able to see over the fence and observe the game. The caption reads equality. The cartoon's split screen features the same three men but this time the tall man doesn't have a chest to stand on, the medium height man has one, and the short man has two. This time everyone will be able to watch the match comfortably. The caption on this side reads Justice. Many people argue that justice can only be served through an equal distribution of resources, but this cartoon managed to prove otherwise because although the resources distributed among the three men were not equal, justice was still served because each man could watch the match. Although it is just a fictional example from a cartoon, it teaches an important lesson that should be remembered as every society in the world seeks to establish justice. The fair distribution of resources is simply a component of justice and in itself does not establish justice and it is important not to confuse one with the other. It is false to assume that the equitable provision of resources among people equates to justice being served because this assumption oversimplifies the definition of justice and overlooks many of the barriers and obstacles that cannot be resolved through the simple provision of resources. do not take into account t...... half of the paper ......pability. This assumes that providing all members of a society with the same resources will result in the same resources for all members, but we all know that is not true. If you return to the example given by the three men standing on a crate watching the baseball game, only one was able to use the resource to maximum benefit while the other two suffered. Justice was established when two chests were provided for the shortest man, one for the man of medium height and the tall man did not need a chest but everyone could enjoy the game comfortably. Many critics oppose this approach to justice arguing that it is too individualistic and does not do enough to solve existing problems. Even with these objections, it is clear that establishing justice cannot truly be accomplished through the simple provision of resources.
