Topic > Prohibition of Capital Punishment - 821

Capital punishment is the lawful execution of a person through judicial control. In the world, 95 countries have abolished capital punishment, while 58 countries still actively practice it. Closer to home in the United States it is still practiced but varies from state to state. States that still practice it use one of two methods which would be the electric chair or lethal injection most commonly used. These methods have been debated over time and carry with them many ethical implications in society. I personally believe that capital punishment should be banned because it violates the fundamental right to life. Regardless of the act they committed, I think this right should still be true and he or she should be able to choose a different method of punishment such as extended prison time combined with community service and psychotherapy. The practice of capital punishment is that it has evolved towards a more humane nature for the person being executed. Capital punishment has been practiced for hundreds of years. In the late 18th century, Britain banned drawing and quartering, a gruesome act in which “victims were first hung by the neck but taken from the gallows while still alive” (Hung, draw and quarter 10). In the same period France had also invented the guillotine. Hangings were made more humane by replacing short-drop hangings (which essentially caused "criminals" to die of suffocation) with a long-drop hanging where the criminal was dropped from a greater distance which caused their neck to break and, in turn, severed the spinal column. , this change in technique would reduce the victim's suffering. In the University...... middle of paper......should be banned 82). The mother stated that she did not want Severs to die to avoid pain on her mother's part, because she knew what it was like to lose a child. This kind of compassion is what our society needs. It shows that we are human at our core and that we must all obey the natural right to life, no matter who we are or what we have done.
