On May 4, 1970, an extremely tragic event occurred at Kent State University. The National Guard and police officers on campus failed to calm the students and decided to launch tear gas on the group of students. When the tear gas failed to disperse and calm the students, the National Guard began firing projectiles at the demonstrating students. This caused utter chaos and also led to many students being seriously injured or killed. Over 900 college campuses were closed as more than a million students went on strike following the shooting at Kent State University. The Kent State University shooting was a dramatic event that is claimed to have "directly impacted national politics and was an element of what destroyed the Nixon administration." The students were mobilizing because they did not believe in the continuation of the Vietnam War and did not agree with Nixon's invasion of Cambodia, which was a neutral country at the time. It is a mystery that will never be solved, we will never know what really happened, nor if this was really the event that led to the Watergate scandal and the end of the Nixon administration.
