On May 4, 1970, an extremely tragic event occurred at Kent State University. On this date, the Kent State shooting occurred, causing a huge catastrophe on campus and physically injuring and killing many students. The shootings that occurred on this day were provoked by the participation of many students in an anti-war demonstration on campus. The National Guard and police officers on campus failed to calm the students and decided to launch tear gas on the group of students. When the tear gas failed to disperse and calm the students, the National Guard began firing projectiles at the demonstrating students. This caused utter chaos and also led to many students being seriously injured or killed. Over 900 college campuses were closed as more than a million students went on strike following the shooting at Kent State University. The Kent State University shooting was a dramatic event that is claimed to have "directly impacted national politics and was an element of what destroyed the Nixon administration." The students were mobilizing because they did not believe in the continuation of the Vietnam War and did not agree with Nixon's invasion of Cambodia, which was a neutral country at the time. "The decision to bring the Ohio National Guard to the Kent State University campus was directly related to the decisions regarding American involvement in the Vietnam War1." During this time many college campuses held anti-war demonstrations, so the National Guard was brought in to calm and disperse some of the demonstrations that were occurring. The particular demonstration that occurred at Kent State University on May 4th caused a huge outcry and attention from all sides. This rally became known and so did the others that were taking place... middle of paper... due to the end of the Nixon administration; in fact they are not connected at all. It is strongly argued that the Kent State shooting caused Nixon's paranoia to become so high that he didn't know what to do. Nixon let his paranoia and controlling ways get the better of him, resulting in the destruction of the Nixon administration. The Kent State shooting was a tragic event that led to a series of unfortunate events. It had a direct impact on national politics and was an element of what destroyed the Nixon administration. The Kent State shooting is still discussed today. There are those who want to reopen the investigation to find out what really happened that day. It is a mystery that will never be solved, we will never know what really happened, nor if this was really the event that led to the Watergate scandal and the end of the Nixon administration.
