Violence in American society from the perspective of conflict theoryThe Cincinnati riotsIntroductionThe 2001 Cincinnati riots are some of the greatest reflections of racial discrimination resulting from the ineffectiveness of the institutions of security that cause enormous losses and slowed development. These riots highlighted the great divide that has undermined American society. The case is a strong indication of unresolved personal feelings of white superiority over other people of color. This article explores unresolved conflicts between blacks and whites using conflict theory, conflicts over resources, ineffectiveness of institutions, and how politics influenced the riots. Furthermore, the document analyzes how the problem was resolved and the outcome of the deliberations on the issue. It is the opinion of this article that conflict arising over resources and the sense of threat to whites from blacks in society were the underlying cause of the riots. The article concludes by reiterating Martin Luther King Junior's appeal that the coexistence of all people and their judgment be based on character and not on skin color (Lan, 2009). Description of the riotsCauses of the Cincinnati riotsDirect murder by policeThe Cincinnati riots were prompted by a wide range of events that saw massive discrimination of blacks in a way that reflected flashbacks of slavery. Between 1995 and 2001, Lan (2009) reports that approximately fifteen people were executed by the police or lost their lives at the hands of security agents. As a result, the black community became alarmed at the prospect of being targeted by security agents and ultimately being executed or dying in their hands.
