The agricultural sector is an important resource for Ghana's economy. It represents one third of the gross domestic product (GDP) and provides over 55% of the population's jobs (Ghana Agriculture). The climate of Ghana is tropical; hot and dry along the southeastern coast; hot and humid in the southwest and hot and dry in the north. The territory is mainly lowland with a plateau divided into the central-southern area. The overall percentage of land use is equal to 17.54% of arable land and 9.22% of permanent crops. Current environmental problems in Ghana are deforestation, overgrazing, soil erosion, drought, water pollution and inadequate supplies of drinking water. However, this country is capable of producing a variety of crops including mango, cereals, oil palm, pineapple, cocoa and kola nut (Ghana). Ghana's first president, Kwane Nkrumah, during his time in office from 1952 to 1966, attempted to use the agricultural sector as a basis to increase Ghana's economy, but agricultural production had declined. Since then the sector has been steadily declining. By the end of the 1960s, commodity prices and food production had collapsed. By 1983, Ghana's agricultural production for export had reached an all-time low due to the country's drought. During the year 1984, the government decided to initiate the economic recovery program, to reduce Ghana's debt and improve its position in the global economy (Ghana Agriculture). Despite Ghana's previous failure, the agricultural sector was once again identified as a major opportunity. on the basis of industrialization to increase economic growth. Furthermore, Ghana is able to dominate crops such as pineapple and be the world's leading supplier. Being able to create jobs, dominate all crops in the world and reduce poverty among Ghanaians is a success for Ghana. Ghana's GDP certainly has significant changes, but there is potential for improvement to increase economic and productive growth, which is what the GDP represents.
