Topic > My Practical Experience: The Uses of Technology in…

At the iPad center, students use a specific app that Mrs. Zeek tells them to use. I've seen kids use the Epic and Xtra Math apps. Epic is a reading app that reads stories to your child. Xtra Math is an app that allows students to practice math skills through games. I thought it was interesting that Mrs. Zeek had a box full of laminated QR codes, one for each student, so that students could access Xtra Math with that. I didn't even know that was possible! Kids absolutely love using iPads. Ms. Zeek also showed me an app she has on her iPad called Classroom, which allows her to see what all the kids are doing on their individual iPads. This is a very useful app, especially for higher grades, so students can't do inappropriate things on iPads. We've talked about app selection in the classroom, and these two apps seem to tick all the boxes like ease of navigation, student engagement, and developmental appropriateness. There is also a listening center where children listen to and follow books on CDs or cassettes. Mrs. Zeek lets the children turn the CD player on and off themselves, but doesn't let them change it
