There are many popular weight loss diets in today's society and one of them is the Weight Watchers diet. The Weight Watchers diet is a program where people can attend weekly support meetings with others who are trying to lose weight, as a way to create accountability partners who help motivate them and keep them on track with their weight loss. This diet was first started by a woman named Jean Nidetch in 1963. Nidetch weighed 214 pounds and wore a size 14 when she first decided to take control of her weight. She went to a free diet clinic near where she lived in New York and stuck strictly to the diet she was prescribed. After losing 20 pounds, Nidetch realized he was losing encouragement. For this reason he decided to call some of his friends who were also overweight and confessed to them that he had an obsession with biscuits. After making this confession, his friends also shared what they struggled with. They decided to call these things their “Frankensteins,” in other words, their food obsessions. Because of this, they started meeting weekly to help each other and, in turn, they all lost weight. People began to learn about the success of this girl group and naturally wanted to be a part of it. As it started to grow, Nidetch decided to host weekly classes as its corporate headquarters. The first public meeting was held in May 1963 in a loft and was completely unpublicized. When he arrived with 50 rented chairs, he realized there were 400 people waiting outside, so they gathered in groups of 50. They developed a meal plan that continues to evolve today and added an exercise plan in 1978. Later that year the company was sold to HJ Heinz Company who now... middle of paper... a support system is very necessary and can help achieve the desired results, but why not get one for free? But again, you'll only get out of it as much as you put in, no matter where you go, what program you join, or what diet you decide to try next.
