Topic > Education in the Bahamas - 938

As Bill Beattie argues, “the purpose of education should be to teach us rather how to think, rather than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves themselves, rather than loading the memory with thoughts of other men." It is undeniably true that education is necessary for students to mature intellectually and adapt to life. However, the educational process should be liberating and not overwhelming. I believe the Bahamas should eschew the “banking concept of education” and incorporate the problem-posing method into school systems; the educational experience should enable students to be able to think critically rather than regurgitate teachers' ideas. In his article The Banking concept of Education, Paulo Freire states that people should consider problem-posing education as opposed to banking education. Initially, through my quest for knowledge in the Bahamas for more than 12 years, I experienced a more liberating education that Freire describes as a problem-posing education. During this experience, where I was given a poem entitled “Dulce Et Decorum Est”. where the purpose of the assignment was to analyze the poem and interpret its meaning. Instead of the teacher stating her ideas about me, I was able to discuss my interpretation of the poem with her and other classmates. The interaction between the teacher, my classmates and me created a "liberating education". (p. 262). Freire would consider it a problematic education because it stimulates interaction and consciousness of the mind, allowing me to form my own ideas. Problem-posing education is the best style to educate our Bahamian students because it “rejects communiqués and embodies communication.” (p. 262) In my case,... middle of paper... poem, I understood that death is inevitable and we should spend less time thinking about it. Rather, we should simply live in the moment. Furthermore, as Freire argues “they (the students) perceive the challenge as interconnected to other problems within a total text, not as a theoretical question, the resulting understanding tends to be increasingly critical and therefore consistently less alienated”. The Bahamas education system would allow people to express their feelings and be able to control emotions that affect our ability to make the right decisions. It is true that the academic pursuit of education is rigorous and many educational systems need to be incorporated. However, if banking education is replaced by problem-posing education, then we dehumanize the people in the system when we should actually be driving towards a liberating experience for them..
