Not all students who drop out of high school disappear completely from school enrollment lists. In the United States, high school dropout is commonly defined for many as a student who drops out of school before graduating from high school. It is estimated that nearly 1.2 million students drop out of school every year; the reasons are various (Berliner et al 9). The consequences of dropping out of school can have long-lasting effects, for example economic and social repercussions (Berliner et al 8). The intent of this literature review is to examine current trends in research across various disciplines regarding dropout, primary causes, and potential solutions. It is known that school dropout can be a serious problem, students who drop out have limited job options to pursue in their life, if employed they usually end up working. The study specifically found that overall individual and family stressors created low academic achievement, high school achievement, motivation, and even drug use were associated with a high likelihood of dropping out (Christle et.al 326) . Recognizing these potential problems and addressing them as early as possible could have a significant impact on a student's academic progress. High school dropouts need motivation and emotional support. What strategies will help keep students in school or encourage them to return to school? Schools can collect data on a student's performance and dropout characteristics to identify potential problems, monitor student attendance, test scores, grades, reported behaviors, activity participation, School attitudes and family participation in school events can provide information to identify students most at risk of dropping out of school
