Topic > Virtue and Virtue Ethics - 863

Virtue is the moral excellence that an engineer must adhere to in order to achieve a sense of fulfillment and virtuous gratification towards his actions. Specifically, virtue ethics emphasizes the individual character of action. Virtue relates to engineering by allowing engineers to practice their intellectual virtues that arise from learning and their ethical virtues that arise from habit. Virtue ethics emphasizes that what matters is who you are and that one should value a person's character, moral habits. Aristotle believed that one can reach a virtuous state when one's potential is realized. He believed that “the essential nature of things lies not in their cause (or beginning), but in their end (telos).” This means that a virtue or excellence is a “average between two extremes of defect and excess”. Virtue is the "right" means between the two extremes and these means are: courage, temperance, prudence and justice. Aristotle also specified two distinct areas of virtue; virtue of character and virtue of thought. Virtues of character lie “between the two extremes of defect and excess,” also known as cardinal virtues. An example of this character is courage, it is the middle ground between cowardice and shamelessness. The virtues of thinking are specialized in one's wisdom and intelligence. An example of this virtue is techne, or skill, it is the ability to write poems and essays skillfully. I have acquired some virtues during my time here at Texas A&M University. During my time at this university, I have acquired two major character virtues. I developed the virtue of temperance by not being self-indulgent or callous. Throughout my life, I have understood the importance of maintaining a perfect medium for pleasure. One should not indulge in things like video games, food and sleep. I have found that to achieve this virtue you need to maintain a good consistent diet and a good sleep schedule. Furthermore, I understood that we need to be fair and give to the people around us. Justice is the idea of giving and one should give to those in need. During my time here at A&M, I have volunteered and given my time to those in need and given them my all to help them improve their current situation.
