In this article I will use a multitude of research that shows academic evidence as to why single sex education is harmful to overall well-being and physiological health throughout life . Sexuality education is defined as “the practice of conducting education in which male and female students attend separate classes or in separate buildings or schools” (Pinzler, p. 785, 2005). The controversy over singles sex education involves aspects such as its effectiveness and the social ramifications of binary genders. Supporters of single-sex education believe there are fewer distractions because everyone is the same sex. Supporters also believe that sex education is also seen as a way to break down stereotypes that women do not perform well in maths and science. They believe that sex education also helps males break out of typical gender roles such as hypermasculinity. However, advocates believe that separating girls and boys makes little to no difference in their academic performance and is actually more damaging to your identity. Supporters of single sex education claim that education will be “separate but equal” (Jackson, 2010). There are many reasons why this statement is discriminatory; History has shown us that this mentality hasn't worked before. This phrase is synonymous with the oppression, segregation, and racism that has taken place in the South for decades. History has shown us that this is not the answer, but is actually a violation of equality. Single-sex education fuels many gender stereotypes. Single sex states that there are only two genders, male and female, and excludes people born intersex. Single-sex schools promote only gender-specific learning, accepting the idea that boys and girls are inherently different. Not only is this notion incorrect, but it leaves little room for individuals who do not fit within prescribed gender norms. Furthermore, it has been proven that single-sex education does not necessarily mean that a child will perform well academically; rather, it depends on socioeconomic factors and the child's general academic drive. Single-sex education is debilitating and can promote heterosexism. With little empirical evidence, many side with single sex education, it is a decision that is not based on concrete evidence and can determine someone's overall well-being..
