Social Construct of Codes The progress of green building dates back to the late 19th century, when it began with the concepts of conservation and preservation of the environment and protection of public health. The idea was opposed at the time because the public believed it contradicted social norms that defined how a private home should be built for the good of the public. It was later accepted as an environmental conservation measure and currently green building programs are fully established departments in various counties across the United States. Homebuilder associations and non-governmental entities have taken collective responsibility in supporting green building. Many people now believe that these programs reflect a paradigm shift in cultural perspective, with a view to public health and environmental conservation (Moore and Nathan 51).
