As I said before, I thought I had an excellent understanding of intercultural communication. I didn't know if I would gain much in this course before I decided to take it. For me, intercultural communication meant talking to people from different cultural backgrounds. For example, two people are from two different countries; communication between them is intercultural. However, I have discovered that intercultural communication is a more complex thing than I ever thought. The definition of intercultural communication can be defined as the ability to successfully form, promote and improve relationships with members of a culture other than one's own. It is based on knowledge of many factors, such as the values, perceptions, customs, social structure, and decision-making practices of the other culture, and on understanding how group members communicate: verbally, nonverbally, in person, in writing and in various business and social contexts, to name just a few. I know that's a long definition. It's not as simple as I ever thought. I will also take the PRT course this semester. It's about global citizen. I found the PRT class and this class has many things in common. When I see the PRT course materials, I could always connect them to intercultural communication. I think the connection between two classes puts you in a global position. To do this, we need to understand the culture in different countries, and cultural awareness is the foundation of communication and involves the ability to distance ourselves from ourselves and become aware of our cultural values, beliefs and perceptions. Throughout the PRT I was taught that cultural awareness is key when we need to interact with people… middle of paper… eded. I wish I could take this course sooner. When I saw the classmates' answers, the answers were very different because every classmate's experience is different. Now I realize how different the customers would be. Even though most of the customers were from the United States, I am not from the United States. First of all I couldn't understand what they needed. I have seen some advertising examples that show that simply translating words is not enough. Pepsi Cola's "Come Alive With Pepsi" campaign, when translated for the Taiwanese market, conveyed the disturbing news that "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave." This shows that to translate meaning effectively requires a deeper understanding of the other culture. In short, intercultural communication is relatively important for me when I want to do business internationally or domestically.
