Erskine Caldwell defines story as "a fictional tale with a meaning, interesting enough to hold the reader's attention." Some of the ways the author grabs the reader's attention use various techniques. Various techniques are used by artists to create complex and challenging works that are meaningful and interesting, as artists use techniques to make their paintings unique. For example, an artist uses shade and color in a painting to give it more complexity and attractiveness. Musicians also use various techniques to create their music and its lyrics creatively, such as translating old songs with a newer version, so as to entertain listeners. Likewise, authors use techniques in their stories, so that they can entertain and motivate readers. In the story “Cornet at night” by Sinclair Ross intelligently uses the technique of contrast to develop the theme and in “Twins” by Eric Wright he uses the technique of foreshadowing to develop the plot and in “Wing's chips” by Mavis Gallant he uses contrast to develop the theme. As mentioned, the author of the story “Cornet at night” Sinclair Ross uses the technique of contrast to develop the theme that different people consider different things important. David Dickson places more value on agricultural work on Sundays and his wife said “not on the Lord's day” (Ross 219) as Sunday is a day when every people should go and celebrate mass in church. David decides to do farm work on Sunday instead of going to family mass because “the corn was ripe and it was Sunday…I have to cut” (Ross 219). He appreciates his work on Sundays as work is more important to him as part of his earnings and the grain is not good. While his wife decides to evaluate m...... middle of paper ......or explains the plot of his story to his wife, who begins to suspect him and his plot. She goes with him to work on his plot and discover his secrets. Eventually, the narrator's wife learns that her husband is cheating on her, when the unusual behavior causes others to lose trust. Finally, in “Wing's chips”, the author uses contrast to strengthen the theme. The narrator's father, who is not a very famous painter, considers himself a good painter and is firmly convinced that he will become a painter one day. People weren't interested in his work until one day he paints a new sign for the new Wing Children store, where he does a great job and makes people proud. Therefore, this information clearly explains that the techniques are used not only by musicians and artists, but also by authors to establish powerful themes for their stories..
