Topic > The Importance of Cultural Relationships in Culture

Here in the United States, we tend to have one husband or one wife, and the couple will decide whether or not they want to have children, and if so, they will decide how many they want. In class we watched a clip about Russia and how this guy had multiple wives. This is a universal setup. Many people will have many wives or many people will have many husbands. Take for example the story of Pema and Sonman. They are brothers and are about to marry the same women from a different village. The wife will leave the house to live with them. Most likely the older brother will have the dominant position, but all brothers will share the sexual encounter with their spouse. When a child is brought up, he will not try to understand who his father is. As far as they are considered, the child is all there. This happens in Tibet. Personally I think this may be related to cultural realism. The idea of having multiple wives or husbands is very strange to us here in the United States because, as I stated above, we generally have one spouse or one husband. But when you look at the situation better it kind of makes sense, this will ensure that the family stays together. All in all there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to sexuality and kinship. This will all vary based on where you are and how you grew up in it
